The fan motor is a very important component of the air conditioning system. The fan motor circulates all of the cool air throughout the home. Without a reliable fan motor, the home can begin to feel very hot and your power bill will go through the roof. To ensure an efficient and effective air conditioning system it is important to know when the fan motor is beginning to break down. Absolute P&M Services will share some of the more classic symptoms of a failing fan motor.
Outside AC Fan Continuously Running & Won’t Turn Off
Sometimes there is nothing wrong with the fan motor directly, but instead is an accompanying component. When you notice that the fan motor continually runs, know that it can lead to major problems with the fan motor. When the fan motor constantly runs, often the relay switch is stuck or is broken. Relay switch malfunction is a simple problem to correct. However, if left unchecked, the entire motor will overheat and break down. In some cases, the constantly running fan motor may also be due to a faulty thermostat.
AC Fan Motor Won’t Start
When a fan motor fails to start completely, this is a clear sign the fan motor has broken down. You will not hear the fan motor running, nor will you feel air coming from the vents. When the fan motor is broken, it is important to have it replaced right away. If you allow the air conditioner to run when the fan motor is broken, the coil can ice up and other components will begin to break down. Never run the air conditioner when the fan motor is down until it is repaired to prevent additional damages.
AC Fan Speed Fluctuates or is Slow
When a fan motor is rotating but is slower than normal, this will cause poor air flow. When a fan motor is moving slowly it is in need of some maintenance. The fan motor is in distress either due to a loose fan belt that needs replacing or the fan motor is gummed up. The fan motor and its moving parts will probably require cleaning and oiling to ensure they can rotate properly and efficiently. When the fan motor is rotating slowly, it may be time for a total HVAC tune-up and servicing.
Condenser Fan Motor Gets Hot & Stops
When the fan motor will run but shorts out or prematurely switches off, this can be due to a couple of problems. If the fan motor turns off suddenly, this may be due to the motor overheating. When the fan motor overheats it will shut off. Another reason why a fan motor will suddenly shut off may be due to an issue with the wiring. If the fan motor’s wiring is loose and damaged the electrical flow may be interrupted.
