To make your central air conditioner work, there are dozens of components. The air conditioner cannot work sufficiently, or at all, should any of these components fail. The air conditioner will eventually need repairs because the moving and even non-moving parts, decay and deteriorate over time and use. However, before the progression is extreme, the routinely scheduled maintenance can catch the problems early on, making many of these repairs avoidable. The central air conditioner fans are one of the major components and commonly has issues that prevents the A/C from performing at its full potential, and today, we at Absolute P&M Services would like to discuss the basics.
Why is AC Fan Not Running?
Your central air conditioning system features two fans; one fan is located in the inside unit that blows cool air for your home and the other is in the outside unit that blows over condenser coils in order to release heat from your home. The home will not be adequately cooled if either fan is not working efficiently. The common sources for preventing the fan from doing its job are listed below.
1) AC Capacitor. Energy is stored by the capacitor which is used to power the air conditioner’s fans. For several reasons, the capacitor can fail which will force the spinning in one of the fans to stop. Generally, a capacitor replacement needs to be done by a professional, which also get the fans up and running.
2) AC Contactor. Electricity flows in and out of an air conditioner’s contactor, which is a switch, in order to control the compressor as well as the condenser fan motor. The contactor wearing down over time is common and when it does, it restricts the outside unit’s fan performance. The simplest and safest remedy is having a professional HVAC expert replace the contractor.
3) Burnt Out AC Motor. Particularly prone to wear and tear, fans can burn out when they undergo too much stress. When the air conditioning unit is not properly maintained, they are especially vulnerable. A bad fan motor is a more serious issue and depending on the age and condition of your system, a professional with either make repairs or replace the system.
4) Damaged or Loose Belt. In older systems that feature a belt-powered fan, the belt can get loose or break and cause the fan to stop spinning properly. Since you likely have an older, less efficient, an air conditioner replacement is in your better interest, however, usually, repairs are also an option.
5) No Power Being Received to AC Unit. Instead of an air conditioner fan problem being the fault of the fan’s assembly, it may be a power issue at fault. If the various parts of your air conditioner can overheat and trip your circuit breaker, for instance, the A/C can be forced to shut down. If this is the case, you can flip the switch at your circuit breaker, however, if this is a continuous problem, call in the experts for assistance.
6) Air Filter Clog. Should your air filter be severely clogged air that the fan blows will be completely blocked, making it appear that it is not operational. Always check the air filter if the air conditioner is not seemingly efficient.
