As the weather starts to get cooler and cooler, we will find that we are starting to rely on our heating systems to keep us warm. Not all homes are heated using the same methods. There are different types of heating systems that all get the job done. They all have their pros and cons, but at the end of the day, it only matters that we are warm when it is cold outside. Absolute P&M Services is here to talk about the many different heating systems that are found in residential settings.
Central Heating Systems Explained
When you have a heating system that will distribute heat throughout your entire home, it is known as a central heating system. There a few different kinds of central heating systems. Following is a rundown of each of them:
– Furnace: Most of the United States uses furnaces to keep their homes warm. This consists of a furnace that is powered using natural gas, fuel oil or propane to heat the air. Once the air has been heated, it is blown into the ductwork found in the walls of your home. This heat is distributed to each room in your home through vents or grills. This is one of the most effective ways to heat a home; which is why it is the most common choice among homeowners.
– Boiler: While furnaces blow warm air through vents, boilers heat water which is then moved through radiators in the home to generate heat. Once the water has cooled off, it is pumped back to the boiler to be heated all over again. Boilers get their power by burning natural gas or fuel oil. While many people use a furnace to heat their home, there are still plenty of homes that are heated using a boiler. It isn’t as efficient as a furnace, but it will still get the job done.
– Heat Pumps: Heat pumps are one of the most energy efficient ways to heat your home. Many of them use geothermal systems that will get their heat from underground. They can be costly to install, but once you have paid that upfront cost, you can see significant savings on your utility bill as they don’t use much electricity to run.
Direct Heat Sources
You may have a gas fireplace or space heaters throughout your home to help keep you warm as well. While these methods can be extremely effective at heating a space, they aren’t effective at heating an entire home. You will likely couple these methods with some source of central heating system.
