It is that time of the year that we begin to transition from using our furnace and begin to rely on the air conditioning system. With winter coming to an end we have a few weeks to prepare our home and it’s cooling system for the upcoming, intense Texas heat. Absolute P&M Services would like to share how to prepare your home and the air conditioning system to ensure you stay cool and comfortable this coming summer season.
Air Seal Your Doors, Windows & Home
As the homeowner you can take a number of steps to ensure your home is ready for the warmer temperatures. To ensure your air conditioner is as effective and efficient as possible, there are steps you can take. One step to ensure your cooling system is efficient is to make sure your home is properly insulated. Insulation can mean a few different things. One is making sure the doors and windows do not leak. You can put added stress on your cooling system if the heat from outside penetrates into your home. Inspect the exterior doors and the windows. Mainly see if they have any leaks. It is common for weatherstripping to wear down and develop leaks. If the doors and windows have leaks, replace the weatherstripping to ensure no unwanted air comes inside the home.
Keep Windows & Curtains Closed in Hot Summer Weather?
During the summer season it helps to keep blinds and curtains closed over windows to reduce the amount of sun entering the home. If your windows do not have good blinds, consider installing some or even use “black out curtains”. Another way to ensure your cooling system is running as smooth and efficiently as possible, is to clean all of the air vents and make sure they are all fully open. Closed air vents are never good and adds stress to the air conditioner.
How Do I Prepare My Air Conditioner for the Summer?
After preparing the home, the homeowner will want to prepare the air conditioner unit. Replacing air filters is a great start. Next, if you have a good outdoor unit, make sure the unit is clean. If there are any weeds and or other plants growing around the unit, cut them down. You will want to make sure there is a foot or more of space around the unit so it can breathe. Plants can choke out the air unit or the unit can suck them inside, causing more problems. As a homeowner make sure the ground air conditioner unit area is clean and open.
Schedule AC Inspection & Tune Up
Another and essential step in preparing for the coming summer season is scheduling an inspection and tune-up. The entire cooling system will need to be inspected by a professional HVAC technician. As they inspect the air conditioning system they will also tune-up the cooling system. The air conditioner coils are cleaned, and moving parts are cleaned and oiled to ensure they operate effectively and efficiently as possible. The technician will look for any worn down components and check the refrigerant levels. If they discover a problem during the tune-up they will share their findings with the homeowner. It will be up to the homeowner at that point to have the failing component repaired now and before the summer hits. By attending to the repairs before the air conditioner runs more demanding cycling, you will ensure your air conditioner’s reliability.
