Why the Central Air Conditioner Fan Won’t Turn Off in Rosenberg, TX; Stuck Relay on AC, Bad Thermostat & More

Has your air conditioner been running nonstop? When the air conditioner won’t turn off it is often the fan itself that is not turning off and is the culprit of the problem. There are a number of errors that can occur that can cause the fan to run constantly. Absolute P&M Services will share why the air conditioner fan will not turn off and what needs to be done to correct the problem.

Troubleshooting when Air Conditioner is Running Constantly

Before you call an emergency repair HVAC service, there are a few things you can do first. One is checking the thermostat and see if it is faulty. Go to the thermostat and turn the indoor temperature setting up a few degrees higher to see if the fan turns off. Additionally, make sure the thermostat is on the auto setting. By raising the temperature on the thermostat, the air conditioner fan should turn off. If it doesn’t turn off, then try turning off the thermostat all together. If the thermostat isn’t controlling the air conditioner then there may be a deeper problem that you should investigate.

Stuck Relay on AC

The relay in the air conditioner unit is designed to open and close the electrical circuits that activate the different components. One of the components that the relay supplies power to is the fan. Over time, the relay can fail causing the circuit to stay open and the fan to remain on. Should this be the case, the relay system will need be replaced. Until an HVAC repair technician arrives, turn off all power to the air conditioner unit to prevent damages to the air conditioner.

Malfunctioning or Bad Thermostat

If it is not the relay switch nor is the thermostat control setting not working, then the overall thermostat could be malfunctioning. The thermostat wiring could have come loose or damaged or the many circuit board of the thermostat may have burned up. You may need to replace the thermostat or check the wiring. At times, a malfunctioning thermostat can be the cause for the fan to run nonstop.

Clogged Air Filters & Dirty Evaporator Coils

When not just the fan but the entire air conditioner is running constantly, it could be due to other problems. One common reason why an air conditioner will run constantly is because the air filters are too dirty and is restricting the air flow. When air flow is restricted, the inside of the home doesn’t cool down and the air conditioner will continually run in effort to cool down the inside of the home. Similarly, restriction is affected when the evaporator coils are either frozen or dirty. If the condenser is dirty or clogged, it can cause the air conditioner to run constantly. Lastly, if the refrigerant is too low then the inside of the home will not cool and the air conditioner will run without stopping in an attempt to cool the inside of the home.
